![]() If you're doing online editorial from the camera sources and making proxies to edit with, you can get just about any speed, go for the easier software choice and see how you like it, you can always upgrade to hardware later. that was for Premiere and Avid editors, we didn't do the Autodesk Flame artists on that, they had internal LSI RAID pcie to Samsung SSDs It's a lot to ask to play down DPX in a video app.įor one client we went with the promax portable (its one of the few that allowed locking avid bins on feature film projects) it had a built in 4TB SSD storage and we plugged in a 30TB Promise to one of its thunderbolt ports. On Promise it's been great streaming DPX 12 bit or Pro Res 4444 depending on the project type. and I have extensively used Promise Pegasus for Autodesk Flame those are quality hardware raids. ![]() I've seen specs sheets on Promax Platform Portable, SNS EVO, QNAP, i don't see any online now the sales guys will send them out. I have no idea of what host adapter is inside the Lacie products. So Areca makes "all in one" thunderbolt boxes like this (like the ARC-8050T3) to compete with them. In addition - companies like G-Tech and Promise use RAID host adapters made by Promise. And there is now an ARC-1884, but I know nothing about it, and have never used it. So the decision gets made not on "which is better" but "how much does it cost". Today, when people find out how much an Areca ARC-1883x costs - and then they have to purchase the RAID enclosure, and then the drives - most people say "forgetaboutit" - and choose a NAS. I can assure you that since those early years, Highpoint has become a great company (a lot of companies learn their lessons if they keep at it) - and their products are terrific today, and are widely used.īut when Apple decided to abandon the server business (around 2015), I started to use software based RAID products from QNAP and Synology - and have not looked back since. At the time, people who wanted to spend less money were purchasing Highpoint RAID host adapters, and I would always hear complaints about this card from people. So I switched to the Areca cards (ARC-1880, ARC 1882X, ARC 1883x) and they were super reliable. And it was that year that I stopped using RAID 5 and only did RAID 6, because of the ATTO R680 and it's problems. When the ATTO R680 hardware RAID card came out, it was a nightmare - I went thru firmware revision over and over again, and it always turned out to be a disaster - this was about 2010. Then early SATA RAID host adapters came out, and I started to use the ATTO R380 which was great. In the past, I have dealt with hardware RAID issues with all the Port multipler RAID cards from Sonnet and Cal Digit (the FastA series) that used the Silicon Image RAID chip (the 3124, which was a nightmare). But these companies are dealing internally with their own products - so I am not dealing with the incompatability issues myself. I am seeing no performance difference with these products. And I have demo'ed SoftRaid at OWC and Sonnet's request, and it seems great. Like I said - these days, I am mainly dealing with NAS systems from QNAP and Synology that are only using software RAID.
